The Analysis of "Věda" Supplement of Lidové noviny Daily 1997-2012
Šafránek, Jakub ; Jirák, Jan (advisor) ; Kraus, Jiří (referee)
This work offers a longitudinal analysis of the "Science" section in Lidove noviny in between years 1997-2012 as well as the theoretical background for science journalism in the Czech republic. In the theoretical part you will find discourse analysis for both of general journalism and science, which is completed with the description of science journalism which bridges the gap between the former two discourses. The analysis of science journalism and its forms in the Czech republic follows. Then the press title Lidove noviny and its "Science" section are presented. The latter part of this work concerns with the longitudinal analysis of this section, which is based on foreign studies as well as on the interview with Josef Matyas, the editor-in-chief of the "Science" section. Results of this analysis are put together with the theoretical expectations and some interesting questions for further examinations follow.
Effect of swimming on the overall triathlon performance in triathlon races World Championships in years 2000 - 2010
Koktová, Veronika ; Kovářová, Lenka (advisor) ; Horčic, Josef (referee)
Title: The influence of swimming part of triathlon the total performance in competitions of world championships 2000-2010. Objectives: The aim is to investigate the influence of the swimming part of the total performance in triathlon in the lost 10 years. Methods: The relation between two variables (times from swimming and the total time of competitions from competitions of world championships 2000-2010 were described with the help of linear regression. Individual years were then compared in a point graph. Results: Our hypothese were confirmmed. It means that the result from the swimming part explains the result from the competition in less than 30%, which means the R2 is smaller than 0,3. We also found, that the influnence of the swimming part on the final result in triathlon has not changed in the last years. The relationship times in the swimming part and total (final) times was closest in 2005 (R2= 0,21). In other years, this dependence is lower, R2 was smaller than 0,07. Keywords: linear regression, longitudinal analysis, performance
Time use dependent on presence of children in household for generation 40s to 70s of the 20th century in the United States of America
Slabá, Jitka ; Kurtinová, Olga (advisor) ; Šťastná, Anna (referee)
Time use dependent on presence of children in household for generation 40s to 70s of the 20th century in the United States of America Abstract: The fertility of women has declined under reproduction level 2.1 children per women in economic developed countries during the last few decades. At the same time the employment of women has risen and time use has changed. Main aim of this thesis is to understand how generations born in 1940-1979 living in the USA changed the spending of their time. The AHTUS data set is analysed by comparing averages of times spent by total work, paid work, unpaid work and child care. The time spent by total work declined between generations born at 40s and 70s. Average time spent by paid work declined too. The men's average time spent by unpaid work increased and women's average time decreased. In spite of fertility decrease between 40s and 70s generations, the women's and men's time spent by childcare extremely increased. The men's time spent by child care increased five times, while women's time spent by child care increased more than three times. The rise of time spent by child care is realized by increasing in primary and secondary activities. Primary activities contain time spent by childcare, secondary activities include all activities where childcare was declared e as a...
Change in Civil Society? Connecting Globalisation and Sociocultural Cleavage with the Rise of Populism
Coufalová, Linda ; Císař, Ondřej (advisor) ; Remr, Jiří (referee)
This thesis employs the globalization and integration-demarcation cleavage theory formulated by Huttar [2014] and Kriesi [2012], conception of populism formulated by Mudde [2017] and draws on Gramscian conception of civil society and hegemony. Aim of this thesis is to build a model of causal influence of globalization on cleavage and on populism, as was suggested by Hutter [2014]. After building this model, the aim is to explore how this theoretical relationship hold's over the 30 years since 90's, when the connection between globalization and new sociocultural cleavage had been theoretically suggested. For this model I am using KOF Globalization Index, European Values Survey datasets and Authoritarian Populism Index constructed and published by Timbro in years 1990, 1999, 2008 and 2017. This model is built on a dataset containing 38 countries on European continent or being a candidate country for EU. I am elaborating Hutter's theoretical suggestion and framing it in Gramscian conception of civil society. This allows me to suggest that populists are using organic crisis in a society to attract people who feel disjointed from current hegemonical elite and to create counterhegemony. The theory is, that globalization increases the tension between winners and losers of globalization sides of cleavage...
Longitudinal analysis of excess mortality of men in the adolescence and early adulthood of the Czech Republic
Kratochvílová, Eva ; Mazouch, Petr (advisor)
The excess mortality of young men is discussed in many disciplines. However, the determinants of its occurrence are not yet fully apparent. This work is therefore focused on the detailed analysis of the male mortality rates in adolescence and early adulthood (15-30 years of age) in the Czech Republic, for cohorts born in 1935-1990. The development of mortality is also expressed by the aggregate indicator of the temporary median life span and its decomposition through the Pressat decomposition method of life expectancy. Furthermore, the difference in male and female mortality is compared. Based on an analysis of the selected longitudinal data, the validity of endogenous and exogenous hypotheses on the development of male mortality at the young age is tested.
